USA Today is reporting that Michael Sessions, an 18 year old high school senior, was just elected as mayor in his town of Hillsdale, Michigan.
He will be sworn in during a ceremony on November 21.
This is a perfect example of someone who wanted to achieve something – and then set out and accomplished it. Michael Sessions turned 18 on September 22, 2005; he registered to vote the day after his birthday, and became a candidate for Mayor the next day.
Michael Sessions couldn’t even get on the ballot because he was too young this past Spring. But he didn’t let that stop him. Instead, he tried to come up with another solution to reach his desired outcome – and set out to be a write-in candidate.
He used $700 in savings and went door to door, working to convince his town of 9,000 that they should remember his name and write it on the ballot come November.
It worked.
According to USA Today, Michael Sessions got nearly 10% more votes than the incumbent – 732 write-in votes compared with 668 for the other guy.
But that numbers do not really matter. The key lesson to learn from this is that you should not put mental barriers in the way of your goals. When you want to achieve something, you must truly commit to it and let your brain work for you instead of against you.
People can accomplish amazing things when they let their brains – the most powerful computers in existence – help them, instead of subconsciously trying to ruin their own success.
Just because you think something is impossible does not mean it cannot be done – it just means that your brain needs a little more time to figure out the solution.
